Through the Lens of the Sea

After almost 30 years of ownership, with great adventures and lot’s of fun, the owners have decided that there is a new future for Phynella. Step aboard Phynella — a vessel where time halts and the golden age of sailing breathes once more.
Built in 1937 by the esteemed Dan Webb in Maldon, as yard number 166, and designed by the legendary Norman Dallimore from Burnham-on-Crouch (Design No. 215), Phynella is not merely a yacht — she is a living legacy of British boatbuilding excellence.
Measuring 12 metres in length, with a graceful beam of 2.95 metres and a draught of 1.95 metres, she offers the perfect balance between elegance and seaworthiness. Her mast rises 15.5 metres above the waterline, supporting a beautifully cut sail plan in Egyption color, crafted by Van der Werf of Made, Netherlands. Her sail wardrobe includes:
Below deck, she offers 5 berths, all finished in classic style, with warm timbers and refined craftsmanship that echo her storied past. Every detail whispers of voyages taken and adventures yet to come.
Her galley features a gas stove and oven, a large Australian style fridge and ample space for your lovely foods.
Her powerful 3-cylinder, 38 BHP Volvo Penta engine offers reliability when the winds fall still, while her modest 9.8 tonnes displacement ensures a confident, comfortable ride even when Poseidon shows his might.
Homeported in Yerseke, Netherlands, Phynella is lovingly maintained with no money spared, her spirit undiminished by time. She is accompanied by an elegant Acorn Tender (Auk) designed by Ian Oughtred, the perfect complement to her classic lines.

In the first week of January we had a traditional sailing trip through Zeeland, the south western river estuary in the Nethelands. And you know what, the birds were watching us!
The Phynella Book – A Labour of Love
After ten years of careful research, writing, and dedication, Phynella’s story has at last been committed to print. The book was formally presented on the 16th of September, 2017 — a proud milestone for all who took part in preserving her legacy.
Gracing the front cover is a striking image of her proud owner, Stanley Lewis, aboard Phynella in the 1950s — a moment of quiet dignity captured in time. On the back, readers will find a heartfelt note from William Dallimore, grandson of Phynella’s esteemed designer, N.E. Dallimore.
It is a tribute not only to a remarkable yacht, but to all those who have sailed her, cherished her, and kept her story alive since 1937.

But soft! Attend the tale of Phynella, noble dame of timbered grace,
Who o’er two decades hence hath carved her path through fair Europa’s face.
From fjord to cove, from sunlit bay to storm-swept brine she flew,
Her canvas full, her keel well-set, ‘gainst tempests fierce and blue.Long journeys pleased her masters well, who sought not rest but range,
For wanderlust did stir their hearts, and still their course would change.
Full many a friend, with curious eye and spirit bold, came nigh,
To share the decks, to brave the swells, beneath the boundless sky.No sea did they forsake for fear, nor wind for want of might,
In calm or gale, in frost or flame, they held their course aright.
And lo! Great Poseidon, lord of wave and surge and tide,
Did smile upon fair Phynella, his beauty on her pride. For she, with lines both fine and true, danced swift o’er Poseidon’s floor,
A vision born of craft and soul, to sail forevermore.
